| Don Peretz taught Middle East Studies at SUNY-Binghamton from 1966-1992, retiring as Professor Emeritus. His doctoral dissertation was the first ever written about the plight of Palestinian refugees, following World War II and the declaration of the State of Israel as a political entity. Don, a pacifist, served in the U.S. Army and later volunteered with AFSC (the Quakers) to help resettle Palestinians in northern Israel. Don’s wife Maya was a Jewish child born in Poland as the Holocaust was taking shape, and protected from harm by a Catholic family. My wife brought me into friendship with Don and Maya, whose compassion for people of diverse heritage was remarkable. My talk will explore what we can learn from people like Don and Maya Peretz in this time of intense polarization in Israel-Palestine. Gary Doupe was born in Bainbridge, NY in 1943. He graduated from Vestal H.S. (1960), Harpur College B.A. Humanities-Music (1964), Wesley Theological Seminary -Washington, D.C. M. Div. (1969), and San Francisco Theological Seminary D. Min. (1982). He was ordained a Deacon (1965) and elder (1969) in the United Methodist Church, and served as a pastor and campus pastor in several locations including Oneonta and Binghamton, NY. Gary has had a lifelong interest in music and social justice. His doctoral dissertation was focused on church opposition to apartheid in South Africa. During the last two decades Gary has been part of a task force on peace with justice in Palestine-Israel; he traveled throughout Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza in 2012. |
