| What does it take to change someone’s heart, to change one’s own heart, and to change how we see? Compassion needs to be cultivated. Raised in the ex-capital of the Confederacy, my own experience was being handed the Lost Cause by those who loved and gave me life. These foundational beliefs are emotionally held, rooted in trust and respect for those who put them in place. What did it take for me to see differently, in the meantime feeling like I was betraying those with whom I began to disagree. From Bryan Stevenson’s “Just Mercy,” to my own particular experiences, we will journey down the trail of events that led to such a turnaround, affirming that underneath it all, back down the chain of experience, we share a common humanity.
