In Isabel Wilkerson’s debut book, The Warmth of Other Suns, she talks about the era of the great migration. After writing that book, she still couldn’t understand why the Civil War and everything that led up to the 1964 Civil Rights Act were not enough to improve the everyday lives of non-whites. In the book Caste, she travels to India and Germany to learn about powerful caste systems that influence people’s lives and behavior. Through stories about real people and “an immersive, deeply researched narrative”, she presents us with this thought provoking and unseen phenomenon that occurs in everyday America.

We will discuss what we have learned from this “eye-opening” book about power and greed, the “surprising health costs” of this caste hierarchy, and its effects on our culture and politics. We will also discuss how we can prepare to move forward.

The discussion will be led by Sandra Pruden.
