Slavery, the Civil War, and America’s Legacy of Racism
Important Event: Dr. Steven Call, Professor of History at SUNY-Broome, will give a lecture exploring the link between acts of racist violence such as the recent massacre of Black people in Buffalo and false narratives about the causes and consequences of the Civil War. Dr. Call’s topic is Slavery, the Civil War, and America’s Legacy of Racism.
“How did a local boy come to have such a twisted view of American history that he felt the need to murder innocent people in Buffalo? In part, it is because too many lies about slavery and its legacy have been perpetuated for so long that many of our fellow Americans – and some highly educated ones at that – have been taught those lies as legitimate history. As America struggle to overcome its historic racism, it’s essential to know the truth about our history and how we got to where we are today. One of the most abused parts of our history is the role slavery played in causing the Civil War, in shaping how it was fought, and in frustrating the nation’s efforts to bring about “A New Birth of Freedom” after the war. Join us as we re-learn America’s history together.” -Steve Call
