A model of perseverance under appalling circumstances is Ernest Shackleton, the polar explorer and captain of Endurance, the ship that was caught, then crushed in Antarctic ice in 1915. How Shackleton handled two years of freezing cold, isolation, immobility, and a nervous crew has much to teach us about dealing with challenges in our own lives.
